Get to Know EvidentlyMD

Katharine DeGeorge, MD, MS

Education and Current Clinical Practice

I am an Associate Professor and practicing physician at the University of Virginia (UVA) in the Department of Family Medicine. I went to medical school at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, PA as part of the MD/PhD program and graduated in 2009 with an MD and Master of Science in Immunology. (Why a Masters in Immunology instead of a PhD? Long story that involves an advisor leaving and a heavy printer).

I did my residency training in family medicine at UVA from 2010-2013 and served as chief resident during my third year.

After residency, I joined the faculty at UVA and have been there ever since. I am very involved in resident and medical student education, and serve as Associate Director of both the Family Medicine Residency Program and Faculty Development Fellowship. I am also the director of the Information Mastery Course for the residents and fellows and developed the app EvidentlyMD originally as a curricular augmentation to that course. Out of that innovation, EvidentlyMD was born!

Research

I am currently heading up a clinical trial involving topical CBD for knee osteoarthritis and have several other studies in progress- one about clinical note writing efficiency among clinicians and another on the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on blood pressure. I received grant funding for development of the EvidentlyMD mobile app for use in medical student education and am actively applying for additional grants for the various projects I am working on.

Awards

I have received a number of awards, including "Best General Practitioner" as voted in Cville Weekly from 2015-2019, UVA's "Best of the Best" in 2019, and was named one of the "Best Doctors in America" in 2019. I was the recipient of UVA's Dean's Award for Clinical Excellence in 2016, and was awarded a departmental teaching award from UVA in 2018.
